Raw Mahogany Obsidian, Tested Blocks
Raw tested Mahogany Obsidian from the quarries of Jalisco, Mexico. We have tested at least two places on each block for cracks and to expose good clean stone. Blocks will be roughly 4-9" inches long/wide however sizes and shapes will vary greatly.
Available in 15 lb, 25 lb, and 40 lb lots. Each 15lb lot will have 3-5 tested cobbles/chunks of stone but this will vary. 25 lb lots will have 6-8 cobbles (approximate, stone size/weight varies). 40 lb lots will include some larger blocks, number of cobbles/chunks will vary greatly.
Longer/thinner chunks can be skinned to one large blank, while the wider/thicker blocks can be spalled.
As these are raw blocks, there will be waste and proper spalling techniques must be used to reduce into usable spalls. Solid copper is the preferred tool for primary reduction.
Volcanic glass with unique wood-like colorful streaks of brown/dark red and black.
Mahogany Obsidian is a popular volcanic glass favored by flintknappers for its unique wood-like colorful streaks of brown/dark red and black, consistent quality, and uniform flaking. Knappers who favor pressure flaking techniques usually enjoy Obsidian in particular for its potential to run super long flakes.
