Pedernales Amoeba Chert - Raw Tested Nodules
Prime raw tested Edwards Plateau Chert from Texas Hill Country. Large variety of sizes with some interesting shapes. Nodules have been tested in at least one spot to check for cracks and expose good stone. Amoeba nodules will be roughly 4"-12" inches long/wide however sizes and shapes will vary greatly.
Available in 15 lb, 25 lb, and 40 lb lots. Each 15lb lot will have 3-5 tested nodules - this will vary. 25 lb lots will have 4-8 cobbles and we can include a larger piece or two. 40 lb lots will include some even larger nodules, number will vary greatly.
Longer/thinner shapes can be skinned to one large blank, while the wider/thicker amoeba can be spalled or slabbed. Most nodules will work fine raw, gloss can be achieved with relatively low temp heat treating (400-440F, turkey roaster works fine), also some have a little texture in the center that improves with heat treatment.
As this is raw stone, there will be waste and other imperfections that we cannot see on initial grading. Proper spalling techniques must be used to reduce into usable spalls. Solid copper is the preferred tool for primary reduction. Dense Texas material can tear up boppers very quickly.
Texas Edwards Plateau Chert ranges in color from light tan to dark brown with some splashes of color from impurities. Pedernales Amoeba is a variety of chert associated with the Edwards Limestone Formation of southern Texas and primarily occurs as nodules in Gillespie County, Texas, but may be found throughout the Pedernales River basin.
