Hopkinsville Kentucky Chert, Tested Blocks
Raw tested Hopkinsville Chert from Southwest Kentucky. We have tested at least two places on each block for cracks and to expose good stone. Blocks will be roughly 4-10" inches long/wide however sizes and shapes will vary greatly.
Available in 15 lb, 25 lb, and 40 lb lots. Each 15lb lot will have 3-5 tested cobbles/chunks of stone but this will vary. 25 lb lots will have 6-8 cobbles (approximate, stone size/weight varies). 40 lb lots will include some larger blocks, number of cobbles/chunks will vary greatly.
Longer/thinner chunks can be skinned to one large blank, while the wider/thicker blocks can be spalled or slabbed.
As these are raw blocks, there will be waste and other imperfections that we cannot see on initial grading. Proper spalling techniques must be used to reduce into usable spalls. Solid copper is the preferred tool for primary reduction.
Hopkinsville Chert ranges in color from a light to dark gray. Associated with the Ste. Genevieve Limestone formation of Kentucky. Primary outcroppings are located in Hopkinsville, Christian County, Kentucky. May also be found North Tennessee.
